Girls Varsity Basketball wins home opener vs. Birch Run HS School

BIRCH RUN HIGH SCHOOL: 29
In the home opener the Lady Indians won 41-29. The game started about as bad as it could for Chesaning as the team found themselves down 12-2 at the end of the first quarter. Turnovers and bad decisions on offense contributed to the deficit.
The team came to life in the second quarter outscoring Birch Run 20-4 to take a 22-16 halftime lead. The third quarter was not a great quarter of basketball but the Indians were able to increase their lead 27-19. We played better in the 4th quarter outscoring Birch Run 14-10 to close out the game.
Ava Devereaux had a big game for the Indians scoring 17 points, grabbing 9 rebounds and 5 steals.
Hannah Oakes scored 12 points and led the team with 17 rebounds.
Charley Mahan had 8 points and 5 rebounds.
The offense was led by captain, Kennedy McAlpine, who did a great job of keeping the team in the game. She played 29+ minutes and really stepped up as we had 2 seniors starters miss the game tonight due to injury/illness. Kennedy scored 4 points, had 7 rebounds and 3 steals.
Avery Butcher played shut down defense on a good Birch Run player while grabbing 3 rebounds, dishing out 4 assists and deflecting 3 passes.
It was a team effort as Alexia Mugute had 1 rebound and 2 deflections, Hannah Cooper played quality minutes stealing the ball 5 times and getting 2 rebounds. Avery Beckman grabbed 1 rebound and had 1 deflection.
The team's record is now 1-1.
Next up is a league matchup with Byron, Friday night 7pm.
